                                                        Assignment #2 blog

The fictional novel, The Handmaid's Tale, by author Margaret Atwood, narrates a story
about women who are locked in this building where they can't leave and belonging to a group of handmaids. The main character thoughts and her outlook on life gives a hopeful tone that portray the work of the book as a whole. The protagonist feels like where she is held at the moment does not fit who she is and who she feels she should be living life.
The main character, Offerd, desires and has flashbacks of having freedom and times
when she had a say on what she can do with her body, not just being a reproductive product. Offerd, and along with some other women, are stripped of their personal rights. "In the days of anarchy, it was freedom to. Now you are being given freedom from."(p.24) In the days that was so called the days of disorder, women had freedom to make their own choices; but in the present time the characters lived in the book, women(as well as most people), were given freedom from someone that is in power. As Offerd reminisce about the days that she experienced freedom, she feels less of a human due to the fact that she will most likely be in the in the state of idleness for a while. When she was in the "waiting room" she thought to herself, "Will I ever be in a hotel room again? How i wasted them, those rooms, that freedom from being seen."(p.50). This quote shows Offerd rembering the time of being free but then hoping for and kind of doubting will she ever experience that freedom of being free again. It got so bad, that it got to the point everyday items and needs became scacre to them and also prohibited women. "I rub the butter over my face...There's no longer hand lotion or face cream, not for us. Such things are considered vanities."(p.96) Offerd had to even comprised with the way she lived cause due to high order of living. Little things lotion were even abolished from women.
In conclusion, there is a the want of freedom, which is seeked by the narrator and
the protagonist, Offerd. One always wishes the best for themselves and the main character wishes for freedoom but sadly it seems like that which she longs for will most likely not happen.
